在英语中，worth, worthy, worthwhile 和 worth one’s while 都有“值得”的意思，但它们的用法却有所不同。下面分别谈一谈它们的用法。

一， worth的用法

worth属于adj， 但不能充当定语，也不能单独充当表语，此后需要接一定的结构。常见的句型有：

1．【be worth +动名词】某事值得被做

⑴His suggestion is worth considering. 

 他的提议值得考虑。

⑵He is worth praising.

  他值得表扬。

2．【be worth +n/pron】

⑶I don’t think it’s worth the trouble.   

我觉得它不值得那么费事。

⑷What’s that old man worth ?  

那个老人有多少财产？

注意：worth 还有自己的一些固定搭配。如，worth one’s salt〈干得不错，称职〉，  worth the name〈配得上这个称号，合格的〉，  for all one is worth〈尽力地，拼命地〉，  for what it is worth〈不管有没有价值，不管是真是假〉。例句：

⑸He’s had three jobs in the past year, and all his bosses have said the same thing -----he’s lazy, he refuses to learn and he’s not worth his salt. 

过去的一年他做过三份工作，所有的老板都说他懒惰，不学习，他不称职。

⑹Any art student worth the name would tell you that that is a bad painting.

   任何一个合格的艺术系的学生都会告诉你这张画画得不好。

⑺He studied for all he was worth. 

他拼命学习〈用功〉。

⑻I’ll tell you the news for what it is worth. 

虽然不知道是真是假，但我想告诉你这个消息。

二， worthy 的用法

worthy 属于adj,也不能单独充当表语，其后须加结构。常见句型有：

1，【sth. be worthy to be done】某事值得做……

2，【sth. be worthy of being done】= sth. be worth doing某事值得做……

3，【sth. be worthy of +n】〈除金钱，时间，精力以外的其它名词〉

⑼It’s worthy to be mentioned. 这一点值得一提。

  =It’s worthy of being mentioned.

  =It’s worth mentioning.

⑽This museum is well worthy of a visit. 这博物馆很值得参观。

  =This museum is well worthy to be visited .

  = This museum is well worth visiting.

  = This museum is well worthy of being visited.

注意：worthy 除了表语外，它还可以作定语。意思是“有价值的”“值得尊敬的”“有意义的”。例如：

⑾He has lived a worthy life. 

他过着一种有意义的生活

⑿ I’m afraid our worthy friends won’t help us.

恐怕我们那些可尊敬的朋友不会帮助我们的。

⒀The school has graduated many worthy young people.

这所学校已毕业了许多有出息的年轻人。

三， worthwhile 在句子中可单独充当表语，其主语既可以是动词不定式，也可以是v-ing 词，主要意思是“某事值得花时间去做”。但它常使用it充当形式主语。而 worth one’s/the while既可以直接作表语，也可常接不定式作主语。常见句型有：

1．【sth. be worth while】某事值得花时间〈去做〉。

2．【It is worth while to do sth.】花时间去某事是值得的。

3．【It is worth while doing sth.】花时间去某事是值得的。

4．【sth. be worth one’s/the  while】某事值得花时间〈去做〉

5．【It is worth one’s/the while to do sth.】花时间去某事是值得的。

⒁The visit to Paris was worthwhile.

到巴黎这次访问很值得。

⒂It is worthwhile visiting the museum .

去参观博物馆是值得的。

⒃This work is worth your while.

这项工作值得你花时间去做。

⒄It is worth your while to come here.

你到这里来是值得的。

注意：如果要副词修饰 worth，worthy或worthwhile，常使用well。这一点我们要特别注意。另外，如在worth与while之间加名词所有格或物主代词时，其后常接动词不定式。
